Description
While I was at EPFL Racing Team, the driverless team mentionned that accurate ground speed estimation regardless of wheel slippage would be beneficial to their algorithms. Looking around at what was possible in this domain, I came across the possibility of harnessing the doppler effect with RADAR to estimate the speed of a vehicle with respect to ground. After discussing this with Prof. Skrivervik of the Microwaves and Antennas Group at EPFL, she proposed that I could focus my bachelor thesis on the design of the antenna array for such a system, as the full system was a bit too ambitious for a bachelor project.
In the end, I managed to design an antenna array that matched the desired specifications, and in testing was very close to the simulations.
